Machines can be beautiful works of art. We need look no further than the legacy of Steve Jobs at Apple. Or Dean Moon (1927-1987), for that matter. Moon was a legendary American automobile designer who took hot rods and custom cars to great heights. He was the founder of the company MOONEYES which still operates today, selling artful but functional car and motorcycle parts, accessories, clothing, and related items. In addition to its original location in California, there is a Japan branch in Honmoku, Yokohama. Since the early 1990s, the company has been led by Shige Suganuma, who was a close friend of the Moon family.
Suganuma has been recognized around the world for keeping the spirit of Moon’s movement alive, and that includes his hosting of the annual Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show. If you’ve never been, it’s an exhibit probably like none you’ve ever seen, with dazzling displays of machinery and interesting cultural history.
As the largest indoor custom car and motorcycle show in Japan, there will be several hundred cars and motorcycles featuring incredible designs and engineering, some of them historic pieces (like a Ford Model T from 1908). It really is like a museum––but of machines or art? You be the judge. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of vendors selling everything from apparel and accessories, to car items and memorabilia. There will be live music, too.
It’s a family friendly affair that kids will love (while the adults become kids again). We at the Seasider attend every year and hope to see you there, too!
