If you are looking for some outdoor fun this summer season, then we highly recommend Camp Baird, in Shuzenji, Shizuoka. There are many highlights to speak of. The surrounding Izu peninsula is rich with nature, offering plenty of biking and hiking opportunities. The town of Shuzenji is famous for hot springs, too, and campers have day-use access to some. Anything else? Indeed; the campgrounds are located on the property of one of Japan’s biggest and best craft breweries: Baird Brewing.
Some in Yokohama might already be familiar with the name, as the company operates Bashamichi Taproom, the popular barbecue and craft beer restaurant in the city. The brewery was fairly recently rebuilt on a much bigger scale on property in Shuzenji that was a defunct campground. From the time the Baird family (yes, the company is family owned) decided to build, they made it their goal to rejuvenate the camp and turn it into a place where families could enjoy time there and also emotionally connect with the brewery.
The brewery is located beside the Kano River and features orchards and a hop yard on the property. Its beautiful 20-tap tasting room includes a large deck with expansive views of the valley. The brewery also offers outdoor activities (like hop picking) depending on the time of the year.
Until July 31st, the brewery is running a crowdfunding project on A-port that will further rejuvenate the grounds with additional facilities. Donors can receive special deals for their contributions. Check out the A-port website if interested.
Otherwise, just contact the brewery to reserve a space, and definitely try some of the delicious beer while you’re there!
