Red, yellow, blue… the colorful lights of Chinatown glow into the night. Despite the lively atmosphere, there aren’t many bars that actually feel like Chinatown. If you’re looking to wrap up a day of exploration, Goku Bar is the perfect spot.
Readers may recognize the name because of Goku Chaso, the teahouse we featured in a previous issue. When evening falls over the bustling streets, it quietly transforms into a cozy bar. Inside, the lighting is dim and warm. Wooden furniture in deep tea and brown tones is softly illuminated by pendant and table lamps, creating a calm, intimate mood. It’s the kind of place where you can unwind and talk for hours with someone special–or just relax with close friends.
The drink menu includes craft beer and whisky inspired by Chinese culture and Yokohama. Try the Taiwanese craft beer from the 24 Solar Terms series, “Autumn Equinox” (¥1,000/bottle)–a deep orange brew with a refreshing, subtly sweet aroma from pomelo peel. Or go for a tea shochu (¥600~), a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else. For food, the handmade dumplings (¥700/5 pcs) are based on owner Sou Hoin’s family recipe, with special care given to the dough and filling. They’re juicy, flavorful, and light enough to keep you reaching for more. The Soy Milk Tantanmen (¥1,000, limited quantity) features cold-style thick noodles with just the right amount of huajiao (Sichuan pepper). It’s springy, hearty, and surprisingly healthy.
The bar entrance is inside the first-floor shop, though after 7:30pm the lights downstairs are turned off. Don’t worry if it seems closed—just look for the small illuminated sign on the floor. Ring the doorbell on the left pillar, and a staff member will come to greet you. Step off the main street near Kanteibyo Temple, slip into a quiet alley, and enjoy a calm autumn evening away from the buzz of Chinatown.
