    Bakeroom

Bakeroom’s desserts have a familiarity to them that brings back childhood memories of baking at home. The warmth of the kitchen while confections bake in the oven and the delicious smell wafting through the house…Bakeroom exudes these cozy, homely vibes and rustic charm with its bright atmosphere, dainty aesthetics and sweet fragrance of fresh pastries that fills the air. You feel at ease the moment you step inside the little bakery where a glass case is stocked with mouth-watering treats, all of which were baked by owner Midori Nishikiori. She grew up in Yokohama with a passion for baking, and dreamt of opening her own cafe since working at one part-time as a student.

Since Bakeroom only opens three times a month, the place was teeming with eager customers determined to get their hands on Nishikiori’s pastries before they ran out. She is hoping to eventually increase business days in the future by hiring more staff. To prepare for days the shop is open, she spends four days baking and preparing. This takes away from her time with her little son. She admits maintaining a work-life as a mother has its challenges, but she tries to find a happy medium between the two. “I bake my treats with utmost care in an effort to express my gratitude to my customers,” says Nishikiori.

The dessert selections varied from fig tarts to brownies, muffins, and various cakes when we visited. The Matcha & Chocolate Cake (¥350) was sublime, and the Cherry Cheesecake Bar (¥350) was a hefty, decadent treat of sweet and creamy goodness topped with delicious crumble. We highly recommend Nishikiori’s S’more (¥350). The soft, thick layer of marshmallow, drizzled with chocolate and sandwiched between two biscuits, just melts in your mouth as you sink your teeth into it. We loved the Berry Ricotta Cheesecake (¥300)–subtly sweet and perfectly moist, the berries added a tangy, sour kick to the mellow, delicate flavor of ricotta cheese. Every bite of Bakeroom’s hearty treats is infused with flavors rich and decadent but mildly sweet with a homemade feel. We can’t wait to go back!
