If your idea of tacos is just ground beef with lettuce and mini tomatoes—like mine used to be—then you need to head to Chapman Tacos for the real deal! On my recent visit I ordered the three-piece set (¥1,400) with asada (grilled beef steak), carnitas (pork simmered with oranges), and pan-fried white fish–which was admittedly a surprise, having never encountered fish tacos before. The one I recommend most is carnitas. The pork, slowly cooked in lard, comes out tender and juicy. It’s not heavy at all; in fact, once you top it with onion, cilantro, jalapeños, and their homemade salsa, it tastes lighter than you’d expect. It’s all self-serve, so you can adjust the toppings however you like. The tortillas are made fresh daily using imported white and purple corn flour—talk about dedication!
Owner Mitsutaka Yokoyama first traveled to the U.S. because of his love for American music and cars (especially lowriders), and that’s where he discovered tacos. In L.A. taco culture is everywhere, with all kinds of flavors and styles. Captivated by the scene, he started serving carnitas from a food truck in 2018. Yokoyama says he’s always enjoyed recreating the tastes he’s experienced and taught himself how to make the items on his menu.
Along with the tacos, I also ordered the Cheese & Marinated Chicken Quesadilla. And let me tell you, it pairs perfectly with Mexican beer–they offer several kinds (all ¥700). If you’re more of a spirits fan, try the authentic tequila. You can taste the different ages. If you ask Yokoyama, he’ll gladly explain their characteristics and ways to enjoy it.
The interior is full of colorful art and decorations that exude a Mexican vibe, with touches of Chicano culture, too. With hearty, nutrient-packed tacos, this is the perfect spot to recharge!
