    Craft Beer Bar Living

Craft beer bars have been sprouting up throughout Japan over the last few years. Yokohama has seen its share recently, too, and that’s something that puts smiles on our faces. Craft Beer Bar Living, which opened in May, should put big smiles on the faces of many Yokohama residents. It has broad appeal, with good food and beer, an attractive interior and a capable owner.

If you are alone or like chatting, grab a seat at the rather long bar (seating for 10-12) and bend the ear of owner/bartender Jun Arai, a veteran of the cafe/restaurant business in Yokohama.  His warm smile and pleasant demeanor will put you at ease almost immediately. Drinking in a group and looking for a little privacy? The bar has three tables in the back with bamboo blinds to give your party the feeling of a private room. Alternatively, there is nook near the entrance to the bar that acts as a mini art gallery with rentable space for aspiring artists–rather unique for a craft beer bar.

For those with little knowledge of craft beer, Living provides a nice introduction with 12 taps pouring a wide range of beer styles. Craft beer connoisseurs will not be let down either. Draft beer is available in three sizes: S (230ml, ¥600), M (350ml, ¥900), and L (500ml, ¥1200). Those wishing to sample a few different types of beer without getting tipsy can opt for the tasting set (¥1000) which allows you to choose any three beers from the menu. Of course, Arai will offer his recommendations if you’re unsure. Wine and a small selection of cocktails (from ¥600) are also available, in addition to five different styles of premium coffee (¥550-650) for those wishing to refrain from alcohol.
For food, there are three choices of pizza (all for ¥980), everyone’s favorite beer pairing. In fact, the majority of the menu offers foods that will make nice accompaniments to your beverage. Veggie and shrimp fritters (¥700/¥780), marinated mushrooms (¥550), and prosciutto (¥990) are some of our suggestions. Probably best suited to your coffee are Living’s homemade sweets, featuring creme brulee (¥550), NY cheesecake (¥550) and affogato (¥700). If you wish to have them alongside your beer, who are we to judge?
