Enticed by what I had heard about their organic coffee and bread, I visited “ecomo Bakery” in Motomachi with my one-year-old son recently. The café is located on the second floor of Motomachi Plaza, situated at the beginning of Motomachi Shopping Street. You can look out on the street below from the patio seats or sit inside as natural light streams through the all-glass storefront.

The stylish café, which interestingly also houses an architectural office, has about 20 seats. Customers can enjoy leisurely listening to feel-good music with their favorite drink in hand. Baked goods, such as their best-selling bread KAKUKAKU (sold by the loaf), green tea buns with red bean paste, and a variety of muffins and tarts are displayed for customers to choose. In all, about 20 kinds of baked items made from organic flour and sugar, are served daily. Everything in the shop can be eaten there or taken to go.

I ordered a cup of “Brazil”, an organic coffee (¥500). Their drip coffee is prepared by hand and served with fresh milk, organic sugar, and even organic, sweetening syrup. For food I chose the seasonal melon sponge cake (¥500) for myself and the popular milk & cream pudding (¥280) for my son. Big chunks of fresh melon in the cake delivered the taste of summer. My son finished his pudding quickly with a satisfied smile. Must’ve been good.

If you are health-conscious, try their cold-pressed juice or fresh juice made of organic fruit and vegetables. Or you may fancy their organic coke. On your way out, don’t forget to take some baked goods home with you. I fell in love with their shortbread sablé with organic black pepper and cheese. On my next visit I think I’ll try it with their organic beer. A perfect match for a sunny day on the patio!
