Trendy new restaurant? Check. Espresso and pastries? Check, check. Great atmosphere, harborside dining and even good beer? Check, check, check. Combining a California-style restaurant with the Brooklyn Roasting Company’s coffee and beer, &Swell exudes an interesting American east coast meets west coast feel. Located in the new bayside Marine & Walk Yokohama shopping area, which opened last month, it will surely prove to be an extremely popular destination for weary shoppers and hipsters alike.

The open kitchen of &Swell faces the dining area, so you can watch your food being prepared while you sip on a beverage. The drink menu’s main focus is on espresso and other coffee creations (¥350〜), but flavored teas (¥300〜) and smoothies (¥600) are also available. Brooklyn Lager (¥700) on tap nicely rounds out the drink selections.

Those looking for light eats to accompany their latte can choose from a wide range of baked goods (¥220〜). For more of a meal, the Caesar Salad with Avocado & Papaya (¥1,200), delivered on a wooden cutting board, might be enough for some. Four types of pizza (¥1,400〜), including an interesting Roast Beef Pizza (¥2,100), should satisfy those looking for a little more.
Seating is set up in a variety of arrangements from small tables and a counter looking out on the ocean to a very casual wooden dais. Expect mealtimes and weekends to be busy. If you just want some things to go, in addition to breads and pastries there is an area for souvenirs and take-home items, such as tumblers, coffee beans and bottles of Brooklyn Brewing beer.
