    Izumi tea & bar

There’s a classy eatery in Izumi-cho (Kanagawa Ward) called Izumi Tea & Bar that may stop you in your tracks as you pass. It’s located in a building designed by architect Riken Yamamoto, who just last year won the Pritzker Prize, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture. The building stands on the site of his family home. During weekdays, the restaurant serves lunch, and at night, it transforms into a bar.

The bar is managed by Zenichi Kamiya and Nozomi Yamazaki. Kamiya has a long history in the area, having run the jazz bar Liberte since 1979. He was also known for carrying on the legacy of the famous pizza shop Romero, which was located in Ōkurayama. Although he retired in 2016, he was asked by Yamamoto’s brother (with whom he was classmates) to keep serving pizza at Izumi. The most popular item is the “Liberte Mixed Pizza” (L: ¥1600, M: ¥900) topped with items like salami, bacon, and mushrooms. The square-shaped crust is thin and crispy, enhancing the textures and flavors of the toppings. Customers can also choose their own toppings, and takeout is available.

From the time he was a student, bartender Yamazaki worked at the Nogehara bar Sansou. His parents were on the executive committee of the Honmoku Jazz Festival, and since Liberte was a gathering spot for jazz players, he was drawn in. He began working at Izumi in 2023. Initially, many of their customers were from Liberte, but now more people visit to see him. His growing following speaks to his affability and delicious cocktails. In Izumi-cho, where there are few places open late, his presence is very much appreciated.

On sunny days, the doors are thrown open, allowing guests to enjoy the whole space like a terrace. As the weather warms, folks kick back in the pleasant breezes. It’s the kind of place you’ll keep coming back to.

    Address: Kanagawa-ku, Izumi-cho 15-5

Hours: Lunch 12:00-14:00 (Tues ~ Fri) , Bar 17:00-24:00 (Closed Mondays and Sundays)
