When you discover a new cafe during a walk, do you ever feel the impulse to stop in? Coffee and Baked Ura, tucked away in a back alley near Hakuraku Shopping Street, is a coffee and baked goods shop with an impressive coffee roaster displayed near the entrance. The name “Ura” comes from its backstreet (Uramichi) location; from the last name of the husband-and-wife owners, Tetsuya and Rie Fukaura; and the word ura, a type of bay that evokes a calm, wave-sheltered place.
The couple, hoping to eventually open their own shop, worked as baristas at various coffee shops before getting their shot in October 2023 in Higashi-Hakuraku, a neighborhood full of charming independent stores close to their home. Tetsuya, who won the Japan Hand Drip Championship in 2018, brews each cup with great care. Customers can watch the process from across the counter. Rie is mainly in charge of the baked goods, but with years of barista experience, too, her coffee is highly recommended by Tetsuya.
The shop opens at 8am so many people stop by for coffee before work. Until 10am, it’s available for only ¥300. The café is also kid-friendly, providing a relaxing space for local parents.
The hand-drip coffee menu features the signature Ura Blend, decaf (¥500~), and a variety of seasonal blends and single-origin options (¥550~). All espresso drinks can be made with decaf as well, making it possible to enjoy quality coffee even into the evening. Order some baked goods along with your coffee and relax while enjoying the aroma of fresh coffee beans. The cheesecake (¥600), with its moist texture and refreshingly tangy aftertaste, is especially delicious. If you find a coffee you love, you can also purchase the beans.
Thanks to the natural interior design and the spacious seating, the cafe never feels cramped, even when filled with regulars. Just as its name suggests, a peaceful atmosphere flows through Ura.
